We Knew The Four Winds Would Be Good

Kristin Hannah is one of our favorite authors. So, we weren’t concerned that her latest book, The Four Winds, wouldn’t be good; we knew it would. And it did not disappoint!

The Four Winds seems eerily prescient in 2021 . . . Its message is galvanizing and hopeful: We are a nation of scrappy survivors. We’ve been in dire straits before; we will be again. Hold your people close.”

The New York Times

A Timely Message

Though this story is from the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl era of the 1930s, when millions of people were out of work and unable to produce off their farms due to the ongoing drought, many of the class disparities and lack of opportunities still exist today.

The Four Winds

It’s sad to think in nearly ninety years, even though much has changed, too much hasn’t when it comes to income inequality and the lack of help from a government that can do so much more to help its people.

Elsa Martinelli, the protagonist of this novel, must find a way to save her family during the devastating drought in Texas. In the process, she and her teenage daughter learn about themselves, their relationship with each other and what the American Dream means, and who has the right to pursue it.

Can Elsa save her children and herself from a life of poverty? Is there any spot from Texas to California that isn’t a miserable wasteland where she can carve out a good life? Does she have the courage to find out?

We highly recommend reading this book at your earliest convenience. And when you do, be sure to note the parallels in disparities that exist today.

Publisher Synopsis:

Texas, 1934. Millions are out of work, and drought has broken the Great Plains. Farmers are fighting to keep their land and their livelihoods as the crops are failing, the water is drying up, and dust threatens to bury them all. One of the Great Depression’s darkest periods, the Dust Bowl era, has arrived with a vengeance.

In this uncertain and dangerous time, Elsa Martinelli—like so many of her neighbors—must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or go west, to California, in search of a better life. The Four Winds is an unforgettable portrait of America and the American Dream, as seen through the eyes of one indomitable woman whose courage and sacrifice will come to define a generation.
