Book Review: A Good Marriage

You Never Know What You Might Miss

After finishing this novel, A Good Marriage by Kimberly McCreight, we’d give it a near-top rating. However, it had a bit of a slow build us. It’s in good company, though. One of our favorite novels by Donna Tartt, The Secret History, had a turtle-like start as well. So much so we put the book down several times, wondering if it was worth finishing. Thank goodness we did finish it because it is still one of our top picks in literature.

Since then, we never put a book down before finishing it because you never know what you might miss, right?

“Filled with emotional urgency, sharp insights and profound revelations, Kimberly McCreight’s newest novel is a marvel—both a compelling mystery and a discerning exploration of love and marriage.”

~ Jean Kwok, author of Searching for Sylvie Lee

A Good Marriage Twists and Turns Flawlessly

A Good Marriage is told by Lizzie, an attorney in a struggling marriage contacted by Zach, an old law school friend in need of a lawyer to defend him against the murder charge of his wife, Amanda.

Amanda tells her part of the story, the portion leading up to her death. Woven through these three characters’ stories are a group of deliciously fun, entertaining, and mysterious friends and spouses that keep the mystery twisting and turning flawlessly.

A Good Marriage Isn’t Always What It Seems

We enjoyed the snowball rolling way this story is told. It was like pulling a loose thread from a soft sweater little by little until all the yarn is unraveled in a messy pile on the middle of a cement floor.

These fictional characters provide an entertaining reminder that things aren’t always what they seem at first glance, or even on the second one. People are multifaceted, as are marriages, and this novel explores and reveals the onion-like layers of both in a captivating way.

A Television Series Is In The Works

We heard that Nicole Kidman’s production company Blossom Films picked up A Good Marriage for an Amazon Studios television series. Blossom Films’ most recent production is HBO’s The Undoing, which is fantastic. So, we cannot wait to see how this novel turns out as a series. But, we encourage you to put this book on your list to read before it shows up on the small screen.

A Good Marriage Synopsis:

Lizzie Kitsakis is working late when she gets the call. Grueling hours are standard at elite law firms like Young & Crane, but they’d be easier to swallow if Lizzie was there voluntarily. Until recently, she’d been a happily underpaid federal prosecutor. That job and her brilliant, devoted husband Sam—she had everything she’d ever wanted. And then, suddenly, it all fell apart.

No. That’s a lie. It wasn’t sudden, was it? Long ago, the cracks in Lizzie’s marriage had started to show. She was just good at averting her eyes.

The last thing Lizzie needs right now is a call from an inmate at Rikers asking for help—even if Zach Grayson is an old friend. But Zach is desperate: his wife, Amanda, has been found dead at the bottom of the stairs in their Brooklyn brownstone. And Zach’s the primary suspect.

As Lizzie is drawn into the dark heart of idyllic Park Slope, she learns that Zach and Amanda weren’t what they seemed—and that their friends, a close-knit group of fellow parents at the exclusive Brooklyn Country Day school, might be protecting troubling secrets of their own. In the end, she’s left wondering not only whether her own marriage can be saved but what it means to have a good marriage in the first place.
