Why You Should Read The Light We Lost

We had this novel, The Light We Lost, on our list of books to read for most of 2020. But we kept putting it off as we were never in the mood to read a romance. Now, after reading it, boy, were we missing out.

If you’re wondering, should I read The Light We Lost by Jill Santopolo? The answer is yes, absolutely! Here’s why we think this book is such a good read.

“This love story between Lucy & Gabe spans decades and continents as two star-crossed lovers try to return to each other…Will they ever meet again? This book kept me up at night, turning the pages to find out, and the ending did not disappoint.”

~ Reese Witherspoon

The Story Is So Relatable

As soon as we dove into the first few pages, we couldn’t put the book down. We immediately connected with the characters because, like many, we have experienced the kind of love and loss like the one shared between star-crossed lovers Lucy and Gabe.

After coming together at Columbia University on one of the most traumatic days in American history, Lucy and Gabe continue a bond that spans a couple of engagements, a marriage, several children and lasts decades, and crosses continents, between them.

We have all had heartache in our lives, and most of us have experienced the feeling of not wanting a relationship to end.

The Light We Lost

When you read The Light We Lost, the novel will tug at those strings by drawing you into the love between two people as they come together and then go in different directions but don’t lose their connection. This story culminates in choices made between pursuing a dream and holding on to love and what happens when two people aren’t willing to let go completely.

This novel has the feel of some of our favorite heart-wrenching love stories. One Day, Me Before You, and A Walk to Remember are a few that come to mind. Have some tissues ready when you read The Light We Lost, but don’t miss out on this novel as it was one of our favorites read in 2020.

Publisher Synopsis:

Lucy is faced with a life-altering choice. But before she can make her decision, she must start her story—their story—at the very beginning.

Lucy and Gabe meet as seniors at Columbia University on a day that changes both of their lives forever. Together, they decide they want their lives to mean something, to matter. When they meet again a year later, it seems fated—perhaps they’ll find life’s meaning in each other. But then Gabe becomes a photojournalist assigned to the Middle East and Lucy pursues a career in New York. What follows is a thirteen-year journey of dreams, desires, jealousies, betrayals, and, ultimately, of love. Was it fate that brought them together? Is it a choice that has kept them away? Their journey takes Lucy and Gabe continents apart, but never out of each other’s hearts.

This devastatingly romantic debut novel about the enduring power of first love, with a shocking, unforgettable ending, is Love Story for a new generation.
